It was and old-fashioned pitcher's duel Wednesday night at Hixson High School.

In the Region 3-AA high school fastpitch softball championship game, Hixson's Dawon Millwood pitched a three-hitter as the Lady Wildcats beat Chattanooga Christian, 1-0.

Millwood was sensational, striking out 11 and walking none.

CCS's Jennifer Long gave up only four hits, struck out 11 and walked one.

Hixson (19-4) will play at home Friday against DeKalb County, which was beaten, 9-0, by Goodpasture in the Region 4 title game Wednesday.

CCS will travel to Goodpasture.

Sectional winners will earn berths in the BlueCross Spring Fling next week in Murfreesboro.

"Both pitchers were in total control,'' Hixson coach Janet Tate said. "The umpire was consistent all night, giving them both the outside strike.

"Dawon had some great defense behind her, too. Emily Quarles made a great catch in left field and Taylor Lanham made a great play in center field.''

Hixson scored the game's only run in the bottom of the second when Jenevieve Cena singled. Millwood followed with a fielder's choice, but when the ball was thrown away at first base, Millwood went to second.

Courtesy-runner Cayla Carnes then scored on an RBI single by sophomore Lauren Bray.

"Bray has been clutch for us all season,'' Tate said. "And Cayla did a really good job running the bases on that play.''

Whitney Galloway and Millwood had Hixson's other hits.

Marie Baty had a single and double for CCS and Lauren Curtis hit a double.

Tate said game time for Friday's sectional will be announced on Thursday. She also applauded the efforts of Hixson baseball coach Brian Bray and his players for helping cover the field during a rain delay Wednesday.

"Coach Bray had the weather on his cell phone and knew exactly what we needed to do,'' Tate said. "They covered the field with the tarp like professionals. I am so appreciative. This speaks volumes for coach Bray and his players and what they are trying to accomplish at Hixson.''
