Volunteer Opportunities Available Through United Way’s Volunteer Center

United Way’s Project Ready for School
The following opportunities are available through United Way’s Project Ready for School:
-Volunteer Reader: Volunteer reads stories, talks with children, and implements book extension activities in various community locations. Qualifications: ability to read and write well, willingness to work with a variety of children and adults, enjoyment of sharing reading experience with children. Required Training: PRFS Literacy Volunteer Training and ASQ Screening Training. Specific Tasks: Prepares materials for book extension activities, Reads stories to children, Supports children in reading books (if child is elementary age), Leads book extension activities, Encourages families to use Imagination Library books and read to children.

-Enrollment Volunteer: Volunteer attends community events to provide information about Project Ready for School and sign up new children. Qualifications: Good communication skills, outgoing personality, Ability to read and to write legibly, Ability to set up table display with Project Ready for School materials, Must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and liability insurance coverage. Specific Tasks: Picks up and signs out display and materials at United Way, Sets up Project Ready for School display at events in the community, Explains Imagination Library and additional services available through Project Ready for School, Distributes sign-up cards, Collects sign-up cards and returns these to United Way, Returns display and unused materials to proper storage space at United Way.

-Learning Check-Up Volunteer: Volunteer conducts developmental screening of children enrolled in Project Ready for School. Qualifications: Ability to read and write well, Good communication skills, Ability to work with a wide variety of families. Required Training: PRFS Literacy Volunteer Training. Specific Tasks: Meets with PRFS Director or Graduate Assistant prior to screening to review procedures, Becomes familiar with administration of screening instrument, Completes parent interview for screening, Scores screening and Sends screening results to United Way.

Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprises
This year National NeighborWorks Week activities will be held on June 7, at the Carver Recreation Center at 600 North Orchard Knob Avenue. Volunteers are needed for balloon art, face paint and temporary tattoos. Please bring all materials needed to set up a booth. Volunteers are also needed as dance contest judges and double-dutch jump rope performers, to help with registration, arts and crafts, and to assist children on the inflatable’s. Creative Discovery Museum
Join us for our workshops designed for homeschool children at the Creative Discovery Museum. Students will be learning about "Our Fine Feathered Friends" during May. Topics include bird habitats, what birds eat, and how they survive. It even includes a field trip to observe birds. This workshop is held on Thursdays starting May 1 through May 29 from 1-3 p.m. All training is provided, and fun is definitely guaranteed at these workshops.

We are also looking for upbeat and lively volunteers to work as Funstigators at the Creative Discovery Museum. Funstigators will greet guests as they arrive at the museum and direct them towards their destination as well as provide any information on special events or lessons happening that day. Funstigators will also interact with children as they leave the museum and invite guests to return again soon. The Science Theatre at Northgate Mall is also looking for Funstigators to welcome school groups, and interact with kids and their teachers until their tour is ready. The Lantern Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence
The Lantern needs your help. Volunteers are needed for programs and activities such as taking the residents for walks, gardening, baking, arts and crafts, bible study, music, hobby sharing, etc. Volunteer shifts are available throughout the week and on weekends; 9:30-11:30 a.m., 1:30-4:30 p.m., and 6:00-7:00 p.m. For more information contact Dawn Dunn at 423 396-4700 or ddunndy@aol.com. The Lantern is located at 9300 Messinger Lane in Collegedale.

The Chattanooga Lookouts
Come volunteer for the Chattanooga Lookouts. From May until August, the Lookouts will host Day Games and will need volunteers to assist during these games. Hutcheson Medical Center
Hutcheson Medical Center will be hosting a Memorial Day Weekend Music Festival. Volunteers are needed who have medical training, such as doctors, nurses, paramedics or BLS certification. If you are interested, please call 678 887-0737 or e-mail scottassp@georgiatheatre.com.

United Way’s Volunteer Center promotes volunteerism by recruiting volunteers, connecting volunteers with opportunities, publicly recognizing volunteer efforts, and directing programs that mobilize volunteers to address community problems.
