Lee Golf Hopes For NAIA National Tournament Fading posted May 15, 2008 PLYMOUTH, Ind. - Lee's chances of making the team and individual cuts in the NAIA National Golf Tournament faded in the second round on a rainy and cold day at the National Golf Club. After posting a 309 on Tuesday, the Flames slipped to a 311 on Wednesday afternoon and settled for a 24th position in the 28-team field. Only the top 17 teams and top 40 individuals will make the 54-hole cut. While the news was not good on the course, the Flames picked up some good news when junior Josh Lawson was named to the Ping All Region team. Lawson is now eligible to become an All-American. According to coach Marty Rowe who accompanied coach Jack Souther and his Lee golf team to Indiana, the weather conditions were brutal on Wednesday. The day started out with rain and finished with temperature dropping by some 30 degrees before the Flames left the course. However, the rain and cold apparently did not hamper third-ranked British Columbia. The Thunderbirds took the second-round lead after firing a remarkable 7-under par 281. Blake Rowe-Sleeman carded a sizzling 64 to set a new course record at Indiana National. He also tied the single round national championship record. Sam Cyr of Point Loma and Nick Zappin of Johnson & Wales are tied for the lead with 139 scores. Rowe-Sleeman is two strokes back at 141. In team play, Johnson & Wales slipped to second (579) and defending champion Oklahoma City is starting to make a run at 584. Lee's Matt Clouse continued to battle for a spot in the final field. He is tied for 62nd at 153 (75-78). Josh Lawson also dropped to 82nd. He stands at 155 (76-79). Sam Bedwell stands at 89th. He had his second-straight 78 (156). Wes Nobles and Tyler Nelson moved up the scoring ladder, but it could be too little too late. Nobles stands at 157 (80-77) and Nelson is in the 128th spot (83-78, 161). |
