A 19-year-old was arrested Wednesday on the campus of Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School with five firearms in the trunk of his vehicle.
Catoosa County Sheriff Phil Summers said an alert School Resource Officer at the high school made the arrest.
Officer Charles Nix, a Resource Officer with the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office was investigating a suspicious person on the school property. While investigating a loud music complaint, the SRO found the individual was not a student and began to question the individual further about why he was on campus.
During the investigation, the officer searched the individual’s vehicle and located the five firearms in the trunk.
Daniel Lee Cockburn, 19, of 402 Corey Circle, Fort Oglethorpe, was arrested without incident and charged with possession of a weapon on school property. He was transported to the Catoosa County Detention Center. No bond has been set in regards to his charges.
Sheriff Summers said the incident occurred after school hours. The investigation revealed Cockburn was meeting a friend after school on school property. It is not believed he was connected to the school in any way, the sheriff said.
Cockburn said the guns were in his possession for target practice and that he had left them in his trunk inadvertently after target practice.
Sheriff Summers said, "Officer Nix acted on instinct while investigating an unauthorized person on campus. He is to be commended for his effort and swift arrest in this case."
