The School of Business and Economics at the College of Charleston presented Mrs. Linda Farnsley with the college’s P-12 Teacher Recognition Award. During the school’s award ceremonies on Graduation Weekend, May 9-11, Mrs. Farnsley was given a plaque and cash prize in her honor. She was nominated for the award by Barbara McHenry, a graduating senior majoring in International Business with a minor in Spanish.

Barbara McHenry was a student of Mrs. Farnsley’s at Notre Dame High School in Chattanooga, where Mrs. Farnsley teaches science classes. Barbara writes that, “Mrs. Farnsley deserves this award because she should be recognized for being an invaluable asset to my life, her students, her family, Notre Dame High School, and her community." It was "Mrs. Farnsley’s bright smile and readiness to teach” that made such a memorable impact on Barbara’s high school career.

Since 1999, Mrs. Fransley has been teaching Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, and Genetics at Notre Dame High School. In 2005 she was selected as Notre Dame High School Teacher of the Year, where she also is a co-sponsor of the Student Leadership Council.

Before becoming a teacher, she worked in the Microbiology Department at Baptist Hospital in Nashville. She is married to Patrick Farnsley, and has three children, Sarah, Reed and Kyle.

This is the third year for the College of Charleston Teacher Recognition Award. Senior students at the College were invited to nominate inspirational teachers who played an important role in their lives. Elise Jorgens, Provost of the College, said, “Devoted elementary and secondary school teachers often receive little recognition for their efforts, and students have too few chances to reward them.”

The other 2008 recipients are Ms. Lily Baumil from South Aiken High School in Aiken, S.C.; Mr. Richard Bracknell from Carrollton High School in Carrollton, Ga.; Ms. Lisa Dougherty from Hillendale Elementary School in Chadds Ford, Pa.; and Dr. Nancy Long from South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics in Hartsville, S.C. Each of their schools also received a commemorative plaque and cash award.
