The Bucs of Boyd-Buchanan and the Patriots of CSAS are getting used to overtime games. Both teams had faced overtime in their last two games and to no ones surprise, their region 3-A/AA championship would have to be decided in an extra period. The home Bucs prevailed scoring the game winner in the first overtime period to win 2-1.

Both teams upset state ranked teams on Tuesday with the Bucs defeating Notre Dame in overtime and CSAS beating CCS also in overtime. The two teams played each other to sudden death overtime last week in the District 5 A/AA championship game in which the Bucs won 4-3.

Blake Griffith opened the scoring for the Bucs when he buried a shot from close range after Taylor Shull's shot was saved by the CSAS keeper. The 1-0 lead came in the 30th minute and lasted into the half-time break.

CSAS tied the game in the 66th minute when they converted on a Duncan Keegan header after the ball was sent back across the goal. The Bucs had successfully cleared the first time shot by CSAS but the Patriots were there to get the second chance.

Keagen had a hard shot go off the left post in the 70th minute and the Bucs had two dangerous corner kick opportunities in the final 10 minutes of the game that were successfully cleared by the hard working Patriot defense.

With just under two minutes in the first overtime period, Alex Kuhne's shot from the right side found the inside of the left post and into the goal for what would be the game winner.

Buc head coach Jason Owens doesn't like the overtime games but said his team is getting used to them.

"It's not good for my heart," Owens said of the overtime win. "When we beat them last time 4-3 in overtime we realized we were a good team. This makes three in a row for us which could play to our advantage. We are well conditioned. CSAS is a good team and well coached. I hope we see them again in the state finals."

Both teams advance to the state sectionals which will be played this weekend. CSAS will likely play on Saturday at Station Camp. Boyd-Buchanan got special permission from TSSAA to play on Sunday at 2:30. The Bucs will host Merrol Hyde. Boyd-Buchanan has graduation in the morning on Saturday and Merrol Hyde has graduation that evening.

This is the first time the Bucs have advanced to the state sectionals since they began several years ago. The Bucs were in the region finals in 2002 but lost to Sweetwater which at that point was an elimination game. The last time the Buc went to the state tournament was in 1998.

The Bucs lost to Lenior City 4-3 in double overtime in the championship game.

Boyd-Buchanan moves to 12-2-2 on the season.

CSAS went to the state tournament in 2006, beating USJ in their opening game but lost to eventual champion CAK 3-0 in the semifinals.
