posted May 16, 2008

PLYMOUTH, Ind. - The 2007-08 season ended for the Lee golf team on Thursday afternoon in the third round of the NAIA National Golf Tournament being played at the National Golf Club. However, the honors continued to come in for Flames junior Josh Lawson. After being named to the PING All-Region team on Wednesday, Lawson was selected as a NAIA Academic Scholar on Thursday.

Lee failed to make the cut after 54 holes of play in the national tournament. The Flames fired a 307 on Thursday and finished with a combined three-day total of 927. When all the totals were completed, Lee placed 23rd out of 28 teams.

Not only was Lawson garnering academic honors, he also posted the lowest score for the Flames. After first round scores of 76-79, the 4.0 student fired a 2-over par 74 on Thursday and finished with a 229 and tied for 54th place.

Wes Nobles also tallied a 74 on Thursday. He had earlier rounds of 75-78 and his 231 total was good enough for 74th place. Next came Matt Clouse who was Lee's first-round leader. Clouse posted a 79 on Thursday to go along with a 75-78. He was 86th with a 232 finish.

Freshman Sam Bedwell was 124th after slipping to an 82 on Thursday. Bedwell had earlier fired back-to-back 78's. He came in at 239. Senior Tyler Nelson rounded out Lee scores with a 131st place finish. Nelson posted 83, 78, 80 - 241.

British Columbia remained the tournament leader. The Thunderbirds were 1-over par on Thursday and even-par for the tournament. Johnson & Wales continued to hold the second position, three strokes back. Defending champion Oklahoma City is at +11, while No. 1 ranked Oklahoma Christian has a +12 tally going into the final 18 holes on Friday.

In individual play, Nick Zappin of Johnson & Wales has a two-stroke lead. He fired a 69 on Thursday and takes a 208 into Friday's round. Sam Cyr of Point Loma had a 71 and will fight for the championship with a 210 total.

In his final tournament with the Flames, retiring coach Jack Souther said the weather conditions for the tournament were as bad as he has ever seen. "It was really cold for our rounds on Wednesday and Thursday and we are certainly not a cold weather team. I'm proud of this team for winning the region and making the national tournament for the fourth straight year."
