Morgan Mosby pitched a no-hitter in the opener and a one-hitter in the second and was 5-for-8 at the plate as Southern Baptist Educational Center defeated St. Andrew’s-Sewanee, 17-0 and 13-0, in TSSAA Division II-A softball sub-state play this afternoon at the University of the South.

SBEC (15-4) advances to the state semifinals Tuesday in Murfreesboro, while SAS ends its season at 5-14 overall and 5-3 at home in its first season of varsity play.

“We had a good first year and to place second in our region (East/Middle), have two All-Region players and host the playoffs is a great accomplishment,’’ said SAS coach Dan Barry.

“We lose only two seniors and some of the underclassmen will play summer ball. We should add three or four solid players, so I am excited about next season.’’

Mosby (15-4) was on her game in the opener, striking out eight and facing only two (14) over the minimum as the game was called at the end of four innings due to the mercy rule.

For SAS, Kathryn Wardell reached first on a hit batsman (later forced at second base) and A.G. Owens was safe on a fielder’s choice in the second inning. Loni Skidmore was safe on an error in the fourth.

Mosby, who had a single, home run and four RBIs, struck out the side in the first and third innings.

Also for the victorious Trojans, Sara Carpenter was 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple with three RBIs.

In the second game, Mosby, a junior, was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and struck out four. Jordan Armstrong was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and scored three times in the 13-hit attack.

SAS pitcher Kelsey Pearson had a first inning single to left and struck out two Trojans to end the season with 120 strikeouts.

“We are healthy for the first time in a long time and hopefully are ready for the state tournament,’’ said SBEC coach Mark Duggin, who starts one eighth grader, two in the ninth, two in the 10th and a junior.

“We are hitting the ball well (26 hits and 30 runs today) and should make a run for the state title next week.’’
