McCallie Soccer Advances To Final Four Baylor Hosts MUS Saturday at 11 a.m. posted May 16, 2008 The McCallie soccer team may have had a slow start Friday night in Memphis but they finished well. The Blue Tornado team scored four second half goals to defeat St. Benedict 5-2 in a Division II Class AA sub-state soccer match. The win gives McCallie a spot in the four team Class AA state tournament next week in Murfreesboro. Baylor will be in action on Saturday, hosting Memphis University School at 11 a.m. On Friday at St. Benedict, McCallie found themselves down twice in the first half as St. Benedict got two goals from David Patchen. McCallie took over in the second half with unanswered goals by Clint Parker, Jesse Morgan, Kerr and Max Crabtree. Jesse Morgan also had two assists and Stephen Pollard had one. "We told the guys at half that they were a little on the lethargic side," McCallie head coach Tony Meyers said. "We were able to step up our defensive pressure in the second half and started getting to the 50-50 balls. We just kept running at them, especially with Carter and Max on the outsides." Matt Higgins had two saves for McCallie and Austin Aeschliman had nin for St. Benedict. McCallie improves their overall record to 13-1-1. Meyers is in his seventh year of coaching at McCallie and the Blue Tornado team has been to the state tournament four of those years, with three final four appearances. This year's format allows for just four teams in the tournament which begins next Thursday. The Division II state championship games (A and AA) will be played next Friday. Other Class AA sub-state games include MBA at Father Ryan and Pope John Paul II at Christian Brothers. |
