Baylor Advances To Division II State Baseball Tournament

Solid pitching and a seven-run, sixth inning sparked Baylor to a 12-5 win against visiting Father Ryan today in the deciding game of the sub-state baseball contest at Wyatt McMahan Field.

Baylor (31-5) will play its first game Tuesday at Battleground Academy. Ryan finishes the season at 22-14.

On a beautiful sun-splashed afternoon, winning pitcher Will Stansell, helped himself offensively with a second inning solo home run – his second in two games – that tied the game, 1-1.

Teammate Tyler Massey, playing his final home game for the Red Raiders, was 3-for-4 including a fourth inning leadoff home run – which gave Baylor the lead for good at 2-1 – and scored twice.

Ryan was led by Cole Gobbell with a 2-for-4 afternoon, one RBI and scored once.

The Irish threatened in the top of the first, but one-out singles by Gobbell and Justin Guidry followed by two Baylor infield errors produced only one run. Stansell got out of the jam with an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.

“We were fortunate to get out of the first allowing only one run,’’ said Baylor coach Gene Etter. “Will settled down after that and pitched well until a little trouble in the seventh.’’

Stansell did settle down after dodging that first inning bullet and retired 16 of the next 17 batters. A one-out error in the seventh, followed by a hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases with Baylor leading 9-1.

A single by Father Ryan pinch hitter Sean Howell and a walk to leadoff man Mitchell Burns produced two runs and ended the day for Stansell.

Reliever Josh Ernest was greeted by a Gobbell RBI single, but closed the door on the Irish with two infield outs and a game-ending fly out to centerfielder Dylan Craig.

“I sure am glad we had a big sixth (seven runs), because we needed those insurance runs.’’ Said Etter.

“Will executed his game plan well as we wanted him to throw mostly off speed stuff and mix in some fast balls,’’ Etter commented. “They (Father Ryan batters) hit so well in Friday’s first game (won by Ryan, 15-1) that we had to try and keep them off balance.’’

Stellar Gloves & Arms: Ryan third baseman Drew Brown had a good day at the hot corner with six assists and started a fifth inning double play … Ryan catcher Josh Remke threw out Baylor runners in the first and third innings … Baylor third baseman James Feher started an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the first inning going third-to-home-to first.

Good at Home: Baylor was 15-2 at home this season … 16-4 on the road.

Christian Brothers State Bound: Defending state champ CBHS defeated McCallie, 12-5, in the third game of their sub-state series this afternoon in Memphis. CBHS will play Tuesday at BGA against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
