Kitchen Fire Leaves Woman Homeless
posted May 17, 2008

No injuries were reported in connection with a house fire on Saturday afternoon.

Cynthia Monfort told firefighters that she put some chicken on the stove to cook and then went to another room to lay down. After some time passed, she started smelling smoke and, when she went back to the kitchen, a good portion of the room was on fire.

Ms. Monfort got out of the house and called 911.

The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 5:24 p.m. and responded with four fire companies to 1810 Carson Ave. Battalion Chief Ben Biggs said the firefighters worked quickly to get the blaze under control, but the damage was extensive.

The loss was estimated at around $50,000.

Chief Biggs said the cause of the fire will be listed as accidental due to food being unattended on the stove.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross were called in to provide assistance to Ms. Monfort, who did not have renter's insurance.
