Mall Evacuated Due To Gas Leak posted May 19, 2008 Chattanooga firefighters responded to a gas leak at Hamilton Place Mall shortly before 10 a.m. Monday. Battalion Chief Ben Biggs said a construction crew working on a section of the building near the food court inadvertently broke a 2-inch gas line with a backhoe. Initially, only the food court area was evacuated, but when firefighters began picking up elevated readings on their gas monitors in other parts of the mall, Chief Biggs ordered the evacuation of the entire mall. Chief Biggs said the ventilation system carried the gas fumes throughout the mall before it was shut down. Technicians with the Chattanooga Gas Company arrived moments later and they had the leak shut off at 10:35 a.m. The firefighters used high-powered fans to help ventilate the mall and at 10:50 a.m., mall employees and customers were allowed back in. No injuries were reported. |
