31,000 Scientists Say No To Global Warming - And Response (3) posted May 20, 2008 Here's a little fact that you will never see reported in the press, 31,072 scientists have signed a petition stating that there is no convincing evidence of greenhouse gasses causing global warming. And the media tells me that the argument is over and that everyone is in agreement. I think the media is in agreement, and I think some people that are in power are in agreement, but I would venture a guess that there aren't 31,000 scientists that agree that man is causing global warming. I hate when facts get the way. I am not smart enough to know if global warming is real, if man is causing it, or if it is even bad. But I am smart enough to question what I am being told, especially when I am being told it is decided, and doubting global warming is like being a Holocaust denier. This is important, because our future is being changed based on their version of global warming. Don't think so? How's the price of food and gas lately, and if certain people get their way, it will go a lot higher - and that will make the global warming is our fault crowd even happier. If you want to do something, quit complaining to your friends, and start writing and calling your congressmen, senators, and president that you will not sacrifice your family’s life based on beliefs, not science. Gregg Juster greggjuster@gmail .com * * * Mr. Juster is on the right track regarding global warming. Mankind caused global warming is one of the biggest hokes in decades. It is amazing that liberal politicians can spread this story and the majority of the true scientific community is not allowed to be heard through the liberal media. The big story push has been that the increased amount of human generated carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is causing a major green house effect which is the basis for warming. If you go back to your eighth grade science book, which I studied in the fifties, you would see that the atmospheric composition of carbon dioxide was about 4/100 of one percent. If you move forward in time until the present, you will see that orsat analyses made all over the world show between 360 and 394 parts per million of carbon dioxide. This is just a little less than 4/100 of one percent but is more accurate and not rounded off. I have been unable to find any reports from anywhere on earth that show carbon dioxide above 400 ppm unless it is immediately downwind of a forest fire. Humanity is now consuming multiple times more petroleum and coal than was consumed in the 1950's which means multiple times more carbon dioxide is generated but the average atmospheric carbon dioxide is still increasing only slightly. There is evidence that the earth is warming slightly but most legitimate scientists agree that carbon dioxide is increasing only slightly because of the slight warming trend. They are definitely not following a proportional trend of hydrocarbon consumption. If you will notice, the global warmers, tree huggers and Algores never give any scientific facts to back their claims. They show a few pictures of water vapor plumes being emitted from power plant cooling towers or some other misleading picture to try to fool the general masses without any real explanation. Theirs is a political agenda that can in no way be substantiated by the true scientific community. Ask an engineer, physicists or chemist about the facts but social scientists, political scientists and movie makers are not really capable of explaining the truth. I have an opinion as to why the Algore types are pushing their agenda but I have no facts so I will keep the opinion to myself. Gary Catlett * * * If you want to read some of the basic questions and answers about climate change and global warming visit the EPA website. It is published by the best current understanding of our government's scientists. It really does not help the conversation at all when anyone publishes assertions like this without publishing a source. How can we have a credible debate with half truths, based on pseudo-science. Try reading the basic information first, and some of the FAQ's before claiming the world is flat. There is no hidden agenda or cover up by the "media," unless you count "FUD" fear, uncertainty, and doubt paid for by the companies that have a financial stake in such claims. The Supreme Court ruled in Mass. vs EPA that the government must regulate emissions. Now I don't think anyone would call the court a bastion of liberalism. There is no reason to pit the environment and business against each other. Being good stewards of our world is a win, win for everyone. Glen Harris Chattanooga * * * Thirty-one thousand is truly an impressive number. But why stop there? I encourage everyone reading this article to go to the petition project website and add you’re your name. Anyone can sign this petition, and it appears to be motivated more by politics than by science. It has been in circulation for almost 10 years. Anyone can fill out the form and mail it in. There have been many examples of individuals with no scientific background showing up on the list, including Ginger Spice and the doctor from M*A*S*H. Anyway a brief history of the man and the method behind the list can be found at the source watch website. The balance of economic and environmental concerns is a complicated and monumental issue, with much to be said on either side. Let's not cheapen the debate by throwing politically motivated, reactionary science into the mix. Clif McCormick Highland Park * * * The bottom line in my mind is that the folks who sign on to man-made global warming as being factual science have no problem with the United States having to foot the lion's share of the expense of the Kyoto Protocols, exempting China and India and other "developing" nations from any changes or any reaching into the pockets. To Bill Clinton's eternal credit he didn't sign. Global warming, like evolution, is taught as fact in the public school gulag, where minds are fashioned to perform as profoundly as a summer spent at Lake Winnie. To place so much trust in such ill-equipped and politicized "experts" as our two svelte bombers, Rasputin Gore and "Munchin' Michael" Moore is as nutty as putting Michael Vick in charge of the ASPCA. Actually, at least Vick was wagering his own money, not ours. John R. Smickle Chattanooga jsbottomfeeder@juno.com |
