Pierce Says Mayor Should Not Be Over Audits posted May 20, 2008 City Councilman Leamon Pierce said Tuesday the mayor's office should not be overseeing an auditing department, but the council ought to flex its muscles and have an aggressive auditing program. He noted that Mayor Ron Littlefield launched an aggressive audit department, "but to his day there has not been a single conviction." Councilman Pierce said under the mayor's auditing program "you have to get an idea of who was audited and why and look at who was audited and what for." He recently pointed out that the city charter requires the council to have an auditor who is independent of the mayor. Councilwoman Linda Bennett said she found that the job description for council analyst Randy Burns lists auditing duties. She said that may "meet the letter of the law," but she said there is an issue on how the duties are being carried out. Councilman Dan Page said there might be a way to have a union between Mr. Burns and the mayor's auditors with frequent reports from Mr. Burns to the council. Councilwoman Carol Berz suggested the council members discuss the issue further at a strategic planning session. |
