Buckner Retires Last 18 In 2-1 Win Over Bolton

Buckner pitched a two-hitter, struck out 10 and retired the last 18 as Soddy-Daisy defeated Bolton, 2-1, in its opening game at the Starplex.
The two-time defending state champion Lady Trojans (27-13) will play Beech (40-7) on Wednesday night at 8 eastern time. Beech beat Brentwood High, 6-1, Wednesday.
A Soddy-Daisy victory would send the Lady Trojans into the winners bracket final against Ooltewah. The Lady Owls are 4-1 this year against the Lady Trojans.
Buckner has watched from the bench the last two years while Waters was pitching every inning in leading Soddy-Daisy to state titles.
“I’ve got two state championship rings, but I just want to earn my own ring,’’ Buckner said. “Earn it as a team, of course.’’
A junior, Buckner said she was a little tense early when Bolton (28-13) took a 1-0 lead on Lindsey Costello’s single. She drove in Kelsey Knight, who had doubled.
“At the beginning, I was a little tense, but I got over it,’’ Buckner said.
Said Soddy-Daisy coach Clifford Kirk, “Alesha can hit her spots and we changed our strategy when we figured out the strike zone. We mainly spotted up fastballs after the first inning because he (umpire) had his own little strike zone.’’
After two outs in the fourth inning, Whitney Johnson singled for Soddy-Daisy. Andie Johnson followed with a single and Brooke Ward then delivered a two-run single. The runners had advanced on a wild pitch.
Soddy-Daisy left 11 stranded.
“That was way too many,’’ Kirk said. “A few of our players were a little tight because they hadn’t been here before. I tried not to put pressure on them, but they put some on themselves.
“I know we can’t play this way and beat either Brentwood or Beech. But we needed this one bad. This one got us over the hump and we could get hot.’’
Including its designated player, Soddy-Daisy started one senior, three juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen.
Freshman shortstop Alex Everett was 3-for-3 for Soddy-Daisy while sophomores Ward and Andie Johnson had two hits each.
