Franklin Submits Official Resignation Letter
Takes Effect June 3; City Council To Discuss Vacancy Next Tuesday
posted May 21, 2008

City Councilman John P. “Duke” Franklin submitted an official letter of resignation to Council Chairman Linda Bennett on Wednesday afternoon.

The letter says Councilman Franklin’s resignation will become effective on June 3.

A special called legal and legislative committee meeting will take place next Tuesday at 2 p.m., to address the vacancy.

Meanwhile, Russell Gilbert, longtime Democratic Party precinct chairman in District 5, announced to the Democratic Party Executive Committee that he will seek the post.

Mr. Gilbert is from Washington Hills and is a dietician at Valley Psychiatric Hospital.

Another possible candidate is Cynthia Stanley Cash, who ran against Mr. Franklin for the post in the last election.

Jeff Wilson, County School Board member, is another possibility.

Councilman Franklin’s letter states that “present economic times and the needs of our community deserve full-time attention of all elected and appointed officials. I recognize this and am not able to give such attention at this time.”

Councilman Franklin also said, “I have enjoyed my years of service to the community and only hope the best for all of the citizens of Chattanooga.”
