MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Boyd-Buchanan's Drew Zumbrum scored in the 38th minute of the first half and the Bucs defeated Madison Academic, 1-0, in a Class A-AA soccer quarterfinal Wednesday night.

Boyd-Buchanan improved to 15-2-2 while Region 8 champion Madison Academic ended its season 15-3.

Madison outshot Boyd-Buchanan, 12-7 but the Buc defense was especially strong in the second half.

Boyd-Buchanan head coach Jason Owens thought his team started slow but built confidence.

"I think we were just a little bit nervous to begin with," Owens said. "We are pretty much a bunch of sophomores. Then we started to realize we could play with these guys. There two forwards are really good and we were able to shut them down."

Bucs keeper Jake Lockhart had five saves in the win with his biggest one coming with just three minutes left in the game.

Madison had a free kick from about 28 yards out. The ball was hit hard into the goal and deflected high. Lockhart went up in a crowd and pulled the ball down.

The Bucs goal was created by a flick header by Alex Kuhne. Kuyne's header set Zumbrum up with the shot and goal.

The Bucs defense limited Madison to just just a few dangerous second half chances.

"We didn't push out as much as we wanted to in the second half," Owens said. "But our speed really helped us out. We got a shutout against this team. I am very proud of how our guys played."

Boyd-Buchanan will play perennial A/AA power Knoxville Catholic at 6:30 p.m. in Thursday's semifinal.

"We can beat anyone if we play our game," Owens said of his young Bucs. "If we show up and play our game, we can win."

In other A/AA games, Knox Catholic beat Goodpasture 2-0.

University of Jackson beat Station Camp 2-0 and CAK beat White House 2-0.

CAK plays University of Jackson at 7 p.m.
