Chattanooga’s Live Music Scene: Ben Friberg Trio
by Bob Payne WWW.MYSPACE.COM/DAVRIK
posted May 23, 2008

Perhaps the reason so many people can’t define jazz music is because of the different sub-genres that have morphed over the years. We have had swing, bebop, Dixieland, bop, Latin Jazz, soul jazz, jazz-rock fusion, and a few more. Some people confuse jazz with the blues. Many say that improvisation is the main ingredient in jazz. I don’t understand it all, but we went to see a jazz group play, if for no other reason than to expand my horizons a bit, and maybe gain an appreciation for a musical art-form of which I have very limited experience.

I think we picked a winner to teach us Jazz 101. The Ben Friberg Trio plays each Tuesday and Friday night at Table 2 and each Wednesday at Market Street Tavern. We ventured out on Tuesday, although we got there a bit late. We were just in time to catch the trio’s final two songs. It’s obvious that these three musicians have studied and played jazz for many years. (Yes, there are three of them. Don’t laugh, the Lumbar Five didn’t have five members the times we saw them, and Live at 11 doesn’t have anywhere near eleven members in the band.)

Ben Friberg came over to our table and introduced himself and even offered to see if the trio would play another song. They ended up playing several songs, well past their normal quitting time, and it we appreciated it, as did the other patrons in Table 2. My favorite was “Fly Me To The Moon,” but they also played a great Thelonious Monk tune and some Miles Davis music. Ben plays the Gibson Wes Montgomery guitar, Dave Schwab plays bass, and Matt Turnure plays drums. All three have studied jazz extensively and it shows. They know their Jazz. Their Website is www.benfriberg.com. They are a classy bunch, and they make good music. Catch them at Table 2 or Market Street Tavern.

Table 2 was really nice. I had the Filet Mignon and it was definitely one of the best I have ever eaten. We went back on Saturday and had it again. Table 2 is located downtown, behind Warehouse Row shopping area. The staff was excellent, and the décor is beautiful. Check them out on their website at www.table2restaurant.com.

Sunday, we caught the Stratoblasters, No Big Deal, and CJ’s Energy Blues at the Chattanooga Market. I will highlight the music of The Stratoblasters and CJ’s Energy Blues in upcoming issues. The Market is a great venue for music, and its free and family friendly. Our kids and grandkids love music too, but can’t go with us to the bars and nightclubs to hear bands. So, they get their music fix at the Chattanooga Market. You can learn all about the Market at website www.chattanoogamarket.com. There are many other things to do there, with local vendors and food purveyors, games, and crafts.
