Uhuru Pleads Guilty To Conspiracy To Escape From Federal Prison posted June 5, 2008 A 56-year-old South Pittsburg man serving 22 years in federal prison for armed robbery pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court to conspiring to escape from federal custody. In 2005, Adijah Ashanti Uhuru entered guilty pleas before Judge R. Allen Edgar to the armed robbery of Tony’s Vitamins on Gunbarrel Road. At that time, Uhuru – who has a lengthy criminal history – told the judge he is a college graduate who got hooked on heroin during service in Vietnam. The robber had told a clerk and customer at Tony’s Vitamins that he was going to have to kill them. Later, as he was leaving, he told them they were lucky he was "not in a killing mood." Uhuru's record also includes two bank robberies. At that time he was on parole for an armed robbery in Ohio. He will be sentenced in U.S. District Court at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, when his sentence for armed robbery could be extended by five years as a result of his attempted escape. |
