Difficult Day 3 Of 60-Mile Trail Race Boasts 34 Runners/26 Finishers
posted June 22, 2008

When 34 runners met Sunday at the soccer fields west of Nolan Elementary School on Signal Mountain, 26 had already run 40 miles in two days on two other Chattanooga mountains (Lookout and Raccoon). A brief but intense storm blew through the area Saturday night and caused some blow downs and cool temperatures greeted the runners. By midday it was 80 degrees and heating up nicely.

By then runners were four hours into their 20-mile rocky, technically challenging single track and Jeep road trek.

Overall men's winner, Rock Creek team member and Boonies board member Matt Sims had finished by then, running 3:28:54 Sunday for a cumulative time of 8:35:03 for the total 60 miles.

John Wiygul was 3:38:36 (third for the day) and second male overall for the three days in 9:05:23. Sal Coll finished as first place master's male finisher with a cumulative time of 9:10:42 for the three days.

Roxanne Zobava of Atlanta ran the single Sunday stage in 3:39:21, beating Jaclyn Greenhill, also a Rock Creek race team member, for the day by 5 minutes in a time of 3:44:50.

Jaclyn Greenhill finished first female in the three-day standings and third overall in 9:10:01.

The youngest finisher was 18-year-old John Wiygul of Chattanooga and the oldest finisher was 68-year-old Randal Whorton of Westminster, Colo.

Proceeds from the race benefit Boonies, a non-profit trail enthusiasts' club based in Chattanooga.

The three-day event would not have been possible without the outstanding support of Dawson Wheeler and Rock Creek Outfitters, Bonnies, Greenlife, Salomon, Hammer Nutrition, Smartwool, Mountain Hardware, the Lula Lake Land Trust, Covenant College and numerous local volunteers and support agencies.
