Claydough's Offering "Healthy" Pizzas
posted June 24, 2008

Claydough’s Pizza & More is offering healthy meal options as well as more vegetarian fare, owner Clay Warren said.

He said, "Our aim is to take veggie pizzas to new healthy heights and create fabulous flavor combinations.

"When one thinks pizza, the idea of it being a fantastic way to get vitamins and nutrients doesn’t initially come to mind. But that’s just what you will find at Claydough’s Pizza & More at the corner of East Brainerd and Graysville Roads."

Mr. Warren said he and his wife, Shelly, "wanted to offer more than just your average pizza when we decided to open Claydough’s Pizza & More."

Several pizzas with personality at Claydough’s feature varieties with garlic, which has a long reputation in folk medicine for its health giving properties. Other pizzas contain ingredients such as red peppers, which are an excellent source of Vitamins A, C and folic acid, while others include spinach. Calorie for calorie, spinach provides more nutrients than other foods.

One of the most recent menu additions is the IronMan pizza featuring spinach, ricotta, sausage, mushrooms, mozzarella and pine nuts topped with red sauce.

Claydough’s has recently partnered with Blood Assurance for a new personality pizza that has the right ingredients to promote healthier iron levels.

Mr. Warren said, "Not only does this pizza feature iron-rich ingredients, but pine nuts also contain the highest amount of protein of any seed.

"Another healthy menu selection is the Greek pizza, filled with olive oil and herbs or a creamy white sauce and topped with spinach, feta and mozzarella cheeses, roma tomatoes, red onions, kalamata and black olives and diced chicken. The Tuscan
Pizza is filled with red sauce and topped with sun dried tomatoes, spinach, mozzarella and feta cheeses and diced chicken. These personality pizzas can always be modified by substituting meatless toppings such as meatless sausage, meatless chicken, meatless ham or meatless beef to make them take on a vegetarian personality.

“Our customers are enjoying the vast array of personalities that our pizzas offer. Many of our pizzas are totally unique to Claydough’s with ingredients such as corned beef and sauerkraut or ricotta and spinach.”

Claydough’s offers wings, appetizers, calzones, pasta bowls and salads. Claydough also has a salad dressing recipe that has been passed down through the family for over 50 years.

The menu includes “Gooie Pie”, a Claydough’s original dessert pizza. The Gooie Pie gives a choice of creamy peanut butter or rich smooth fudge. The customer can add a layer of marshmallow cream topped with pecans and milk chocolate chips, one candy topping such as Butterfinger, Oreo, M&M’s or York Peppermint Patties.

Claydough’s Pizza & More is open Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Claydough’s is located at 8126 East Brainerd Road and can be reached by phone at 893-8993.
