Chattanooga’s Live Music Scene: Jumbo Deluxe, Chris Gomez and Friends by Bob Payne WWW.MYSPACE.COM/DAVRIK posted June 27, 2008
Jumbo Deluxe is a blues/R&B based band from the Atlanta area, but they play in the Chattanooga area on a regular basis. The band members are James Calvin - Lead vocals, Jeff Moseley - Keys (piano, organ, and synthesizer) and background vocals, Tom King - Drums and background vocals, Kris Phillips- Guitar and Slide Guitar, Jarrett Johnson - Guitar George Stallings - Bass Guitar and background vocals (and band business manager) I was familiar with Kris Phillips from his days with local band Iron Mike and the Delta Rockers. In his unassuming style, he masters the guitar with perfectly played chords and lightning riffs. Jumbo Deluxe scored a winner with this guy. They have a big sound, and play some bluesy tunes like Pride and Joy, Statesboro Blues, Southbound, Cold Shot and Five Long Years. The only complaint I had was the volume. The volume required for T-Bones is less than the Superdome. It was loud. In fairness to Jumbo Deluxe, they played there in late April and didn’t have the volume to overcome the huge crowd. They brought additional equipment this time and solved the inadequate volume problem. This venue starts out with a rather small crowd early, and then gets packed around 11:30 p.m. Turn it down when there is 30 people there, and then crank it up when the place packs out. However, the band was fantastic. I will definitely go see them again. They will be at the Blues Train Cafe in Dalton on August 15. For samples of their music, try their website at www.Myspace.com/jumbodeluxeband Saturday Night, we caught Chris Gomez and Friends, aka the Random White Boys. Chris is lead vocalist with another great local band, Live at Eleven. He also has guitar wizard Reece Varnell from Bad Little Doggy Band on lead guitar and Greg Rudder on drums. These three guys rock! They are an electrocoustically charged act, and cover every genre of music there is, from David Allan Coe to Def Leppard. (Warning – they incite dancing from the crowd, which takes playing in Red Bank out of the realm of possibilities, as dancing is still illegal there.) Greg brings only a snare drum, a couple cymbals, and a Cajon. The Cajon (pronounced ca-hone) is a wooden box with a hole in the front. Greg rigged it with a foot pedal and plays it like a bass drum. He’s a good drummer, but this set-up proves he is much better than just good. This trio is available for bookings in venues that may not want to pay for a full band, but want the big sound a full band can bring. Contact Chris Gomez at chris@la11.net. One final word about this past weekend: We went out to Lake Winnie to see John Anderson play Sunday night. John Anderson has had five number one country songs and has sold millions of albums, including the double platinum “Seminole Wind”. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of County Music in 2007. His distinct voice and pure country style is still as strong as ever, but that’s not what impressed me. Most impressive was his interaction and true appreciation he showed the large crowd in attendance. Fans were coming up to the stage during songs to get a photo, and John would walk over to them while playing and smile directly into the camera for them. Perhaps it was a small gesture, but his fans appreciated the effort. He mentioned several times how glad he was to be in the Chattanooga area, and at Lake Winnie. The Black Crowes could take some lessons from John Anderson on fan appreciation. He finished the set with Swingin’ and Seminole Wind, my favorites. I have a special attraction to Swingin’, as the topic of the song - Charlotte Johnson -was the inspiration for naming my three black labs over a 25 year period. I left Lake Winnie feeling love from my head down to my toes. Live!
