Hamilton Hurricanes Even Swim Record At 2-2 Patri, Lett, Miller Lead 375-350 Victory Over Cumberland by John Hunt posted June 26, 2008
The visiting Hurricanes had very little problem making themselves feel at home as they evened their season record at 2-2 with the 375-350 victory. The start of the meet was delayed over an hour by a quickly-passing storm, but the presence of lighting and thunder were the main cause for the delay. Once the starting horn sounded, the Hurricanes grabbed an early lead and never looked back. Hamilton had the upper hand at 61-48 following the freestyle races. The advantage was 23 points following the breaststroke races (120-97) and the margin was the same after the medley relay with Hamilton still on top by 172-149. Hamilton’s biggest lead of 25 points came following the individual medley at 216-191. The Currents trimmed it to 21 after the backstroke (268-247) and cut it even more to 319-302 following the butterfly, but the Hurricanes got some crucial wins in the final event of the day – the freestyle relays – to maintain that double-digit lead until the end. Coaches for both teams were somewhat upset after key members of their relay teams decided to leave during the weather delay. For whatever reason, they didn’t return and both teams lost critical points because of it. “This was a good meet once we finally got started,” said Hamilton coach Drew McIlvain before members of his team pushed him into the pool in celebration of their victory. “We had one girl leave during the weather delay and she didn’t come back. That cost us at least 16 points. "The ones who stayed swam all out in every event and that’s what it’s all about – doing their absolute very best they can do and going home and feeling good about what they did," he continued. “We won the White division last year and moved up to another level this year. We didn’t have any idea how we would stack up against these new teams, but we’ve done very sell so far. “I really didn’t know anything about Cumberland before today, but I knew it would be a close meet and it was. I’m just glad that we won,” the 21-year-old McIlvain added with a smile. Danielle Coley and Julie Thornburg both had similar feeling about their team and the progress they’ve made since the opening meet. It’s been a growing experience for the Currents, who are now 1-3 following Thursday’s meet. “They did well. I’ve seen a lot of improvement since we started and that’s what we’re looking for,” Coley said as parents and swimmers alike headed for the parking lot. “We were missing several kids today, but the ones who were here swam awesome,” said Thornburg. “We had one girl who left during the weather delay and she didn’t come back. That killed the relay teams in her age group and cost us a bunch of points. "The outcome of the meet may have been different if we didn’t have the storm at the start,” Thornburg said, trying her best to hide the frustration she was feeling at the moment. Tanay Patri, Sadie Lett and Austin Miller all tallied 19 points to lead the Hurricanes. Kaan Alp and Kimmy Wiley followed with 18 each while Andrew Tallent was next with 14. Stacy Brock, Kent Scruggs and Brooke Thomas all finished with 13 points while Cory Thomas, Gary Fogtman, Mary Beth Pike and Derik Turk added a dozen each. Jacob Tallent finished with 11 while Liz Hall, Sarah Cate Thomas and Carter Miller all finished with day with 10 points. Brianne Holsonback and Trey Tillman both scored 19 points to lead Cumberland’s effort. Chloe Vernon and Matt Kastons were next with 17 apiece while April Forsthoffer, Brian Delaney and Daniel Burt all finished with 15 points. The foursome of Lily Turner, Allie Emmett, Libby Peigen and Connor Delaney all added 13 while James Boyd was next with 12. Justin Isom, Haily Tillman and Wil Webster all finished with 10 points. All league teams will be off next week for vacations and July 4th with the next meet scheduled for Monday, July 7. Both of these teams have byes on July 7, but they are set to meet each other again on Thursday, July 10 at Cumberland. It may be switched to Hamilton if their pool is fixed by then. The Signal Mountain Green Giants will host their annual Developmental Meet this Saturday. The season will conclude with the City Diving Championships at Baylor on July 23 with the ever-competitive City Meet set for Warner Park on Friday and Saturday, July 25-26.
