Top Service At The Bald Headed Bistro by Janet Wilson posted June 27, 2008
We did have a reservation, and were seated promptly on arrival, which is always nice. I hate having to wait for half an hour or so when you have a reservation. Among the thirteen appetizers listed are such enticing items as Smoked North Carolina Trout and Cucumbers ($9) with Cucumber-Lime Vinaigrette, Pickled Fennel and Trout Cavier; Seafood Martini ($14), which is Chilled Jumbo Shrimp, Lump Crab and Maine Lobster with Citrus Remoulade and Key West Cocktail Sauce; and BHB Branding Iron Onion Rings ($9). The onion rings make a terrific presentation. They are stacked on a BHB branding iron and served with Chipotle Dipping Sauce. Wayne and I decided on Crab and Crayfish Spring Rolls ($12). This consists of two crispy spring rolls (which were much larger than I expected) served with sweet onion jam and Chinese barbecue sauce). That jam was delish! We were both pleased with the rolls as well. They were hot and the outside was crispy and we would definitely order them again. The menu also lists several soups and salads and we both decided to order a cup of Crab Bisque ($7). As expected, it was wonderful. Deciding on an entrée wasn’t so easy. At least one of us has ordered Ostrich on each of our previous three visits, but it wasn’t on the menu this time. We were told the menu had recently been redone and it had been removed, but may be added at some point in the future. A few of the entrée listings include Cedar Planked Western Salmon ($24), a Wild Game Platter ($35) consisting of Elk Tenderloin, Kentucky Bison Filet and Fried Quail Breast with Chipotle Remoulade served with Fingerling Potatoes and Juniper Berry-Cabernet Sauce, and Country Ham, Salmon and Asparagus Linguine ($21). Meals are served with bread. Some have vegetable accompaniments and some do not. Wayne decided on the North American Elk Tenderloin ($35), with Red Roasted Potatoes, Crispy Carrots and Cabernet Sauce. The elk was extremely tender and moist. We both thought the carrots were very good, cut in thin strips, battered and fried crispy. I ordered the 7 ounce Kentucky Bison Filet Mignon ($31). This isn’t served with any sides, so if you want one of the sixteen, it is $5. Making that decision was almost as tough as selecting the entrée! How to choose from Braised Red Cabbage with Feta Cheese, Spicy Western Coleslaw, Sauteed Mushrooms with Blue Cheese and Asparagus with Hollandaise. I finally decided on Creamed Spinach. This was different than any other Creamed Spinach I have eaten. It was more whole leaf spinach that had not been cooked to mush, topped with the cheese. Great! The service on this visit was absolutely perfect. Our server, John P., kept an eye on us without being intrusive and we never had more than one course in front of us at the same time. We couldn't have asked for any better. BHB has wonderful desserts such as Yellowstone Peanut Butter Pie, which we have tried in the past; Crème Brulee, and Jack Daniels Pecan Pie with Chocolate Brownie Crust. Desserts are priced from $5 to $7. Dinner specials are offered each weekend. They are also open for lunch on Friday featuring burgers, salads and sandwiches, along with the Blue Plate Special – a Snake River Farms 10 ounce Kobe Chopped Steak for $13, served with garlic mashed potatoes, portabella mushroom sauce and vegetable ragout. The Bald Headed Bistro is definitely a place you will want to visit. Hours are Friday Lunch Break from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. and dinner starting at 4 p.m. seven days a week.
