$48,000 Cash, Drug Residue Found On Kentucky Man
posted June 30, 2008

Authorities found $48,000 in cash hidden in a rental car driven by a Lexington, Ky., man who has been arrested several times for selling drugs.

Cary L. Wilkerson, 29, was arrested after the stop on I-75 southbound last Tuesday.

General Sessions Court Judge Bob Moon on Monday afternoon ordered the cash forfeited.

Chattanooga Police Officer D. Lockhart said he stopped a Dodge truck driven by Wilkerson going 74 miles per hour.

The officer said he noticed a strong smell of cologne inside the vehicle, and he said the driver was nervous and talkative. There were three cell phones in the passenger seat.

He said Wilkerson said he had about $3,000 in his pocket, but was not involved in anything illegal.

Officer Lockhart said a search turned up marijuana shake in the floorboard.

He said under a natural void under the windshield cowling vacuum, he found the $48,000 in cash wrapped in plastic.

He said a K-9 later indicated a narcotics smell on the money.
