ATLANTA -- All of the excitement regarding the returns of Chipper Jones and Mark Kotsay to the lineup was quickly erased by the Phillies' assault on Charlie Morton. The young right-hander encountered the first bad start of his young career and created a deficit too big for the Braves to overcome in their 8-3 loss at Turner Field on Tuesday night.

Making his fourth career start, Morton allowed five earned runs and eight hits in just two-plus innings.

Most of that damage occurred after the 24-year-old hurler surrendered six straight hits, including five singles, to begin the third inning. The only extra-base hit during that stretch came courtesy of Shane Victorino's line-drive, two-run homer over the right-field wall.

The four-run third inning provided the difference for the Phillies, who have won six of the first seven games they've played against the Braves this year and 15 of the past 21 games dating back to last year.

Despite having lost 11 of their previous 14 games entering this series, the Phillies lead the National League East and now have a five-game lead over the fourth-place Braves.

Including the 12 starts he made for Triple-A Richmond, Morton hadn't previously allowed a homer this season. But Pat Burrell ended that streak when he began the second inning by hitting a 1-2 curveball over the left-field wall.

Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick blanked the Braves for the first six innings and then exited after allowing three straight hits, including Greg Norton's pinch-hit, two-run double to begin the bottom of the seventh.

Left-handed reliever J.C. Romero entered and issued consecutive one-out walks to Kelly Johnson and Jones. But he rebounded by inducing consecutive groundouts by Mark Teixeira and Brian McCann.

Jones, who had been out of the lineup for the previous eight games with a strained right quad, showed some hustle when he hit a ball into the right-center-field gap and raced to second for a double. Kotsay, who hadn't played since May 25, went hitless in his four at-bats.

In game two Wednesday night, Jorge Campillo (3-2) is opposed by Adam Eaton (2-6).
