Reichhold Plant Closing At Kensington
posted July 2, 2008

Dow Reichhold Specialty Latex announced the permanent closing of the company’s manufacturing plant located in Kensington, Ga.

The closing will be effective on Aug. 31.

The facility employs 57 people.

Products currently manufactured in the facility will be transferred to other manufacturing sites.

“This rationalization of production capacity is necessary to bring our capability in line with current market demand,” said Jeffrey Welker, president of Dow Reichhold.

The plant is near the intersection of Highways 193 and 136 at the base of Lookout Mountain.

The plant was one of the only remaining customers served by the railroad line through Chattanooga Valley once known as the Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia (TAG) Railroad.

It remains to be seen what effect the plant closure will have on that railroad line.

The TAG at one time had regular runs between Chattanooga and Gadsden, Ala. The tracks were taken up a number of years ago on the southern portion of the line.

Only a few private charters have traveled to Kensington in recent years, including the National Railway Historical Society convention last summer.
