“The second I feel the least bit alarmed, I’m taking over the wheel. You have to go 10 miles under the speed limit or I’m taking the keys,” I warn.

He stops fully at a stop sign, looks both ways, then back to the left again. His hands are positioned carefully at 10 and 2. Carefully, he turns left onto a two-lane highway and I begin to panic. There are all sorts of vehicles on this road! My palms are slippery with sweat and my chest is pounding. I can’t do this. I think that a mailbox narrowly misses the side mirror. I am sure that if it were an inch closer we would have clipped it.

“PULL OVER!”

He abides, and I take over the wheel. He sits quietly in the passenger seat. I know he is angry at me.

“Whoa! What’s the speed limit?” he asks.

I ease up on the accelerator. I hadn’t realized I was speeding.

“Ooops. You rolled right through that stop sign,” he says.

I make a mental note to come to a complete stop next time.

“Oh No! I feel ALARMED!!” he yells.

I give him a withering look.

“OK. You made your point,” I say. “I know I have been difficult about this.”

“You know Mom, It’s not me. It’s you,” he tells me.

And I couldn’t agree more.
