The Signal Mountain Playhouse celebrates its 37 summer of outdoor musical productions with Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma!" The show runs July 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26, and Aug. 1 and 2 at the Playhouse amphitheater. Click to enlarge.
“Oklahoma!” the 37th summer show produced by the Signal Mountain Playhouse, is Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic love story set against the backdrop of the struggle between the farmers and the cowmen during the early 1900’s in the old West.

When it was first produced on Broadway in 1943, “Oklahoma!” broke theatrical ground because it was one of the first to be based on American themes and to use the songs and dances to develop character and advance the plot.

Even though this show is a classic, its story and songs are timeless, and have become part of our culture. The title song, “Oklahoma!” is a showstopper known by all, and “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” has become an anthem of optimism. Other tunes from the show are familiar as well.

Allan Ledford, who directs the Choo Choo Kids of CCA, is directing; David Wood, of the Massari-Wood Dance Center is choreographing; Nanci Crewe is working on vocal numbers; and Sandy Morris is conducting the Playhouse orchestra.

Playing cowpoke Curly is Keith Collins; playing his girlfriend Laurey is Shandra Burnett; playing Aunt Eller is Deb Hoback; playing Ado Annie is Claire Curtis; playing Will Parker is Rudy Foster; and playing Jud Fry is Lee Abelson. Additionally, there is a great cast of supporting players and chorus members.

The show runs Friday and Saturday evenings, July 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26, Aug. 1 and 2 at the Playhouse Amphitheater, just behind the Police and Fire Departments, which are on the main Mountain Highway, on the corner of Rolling Way and James Boulevard.

Curtain is at 8 p.m., but the box office opens at 6 p.m. for ticket sales and lawn chair placement. Tickets, at $5 for children and $10 for adults, are sold at the door on evenings of performances. There are no reservations.

Located on Playhouse grounds are concessions and rest rooms. The Playhouse is handicap-friendly with special rest rooms provided. Those with handicaps may also drive into the Playhouse, moving the cones on Rolling Way and replacing them.
