Lee University Student Receives Travel Scholarship posted July 3, 2008 Lee University Spanish major, Michael Cantu, received a scholarship from the Oxford Presbyterian Church to serve in a church in Barranquilla, Colombia. While in South America, Mr. Cantu will teach English as a second language to students at a local high school, Colegio Nazareth Olaya and will lead worship and accompany the church pastor on visitations. “Mission trips have become a big part of my life," said Mr. Cantu. "I took my first missions trip to Mexico at age 13. Since then I have continued going to Mexico two times per year, once in the summer and again in the fall where we have continued showing the love of Christ through medical help, leading worship services, and leading the people that live in the garbage dumps to Christ. The Lord has given me a chance to be a part of a real mission opportunity to serve another country, while better understanding the situation in Colombia that is oft times misunderstood by Americans. I am truly convinced that I am to help poor and displaced communities in Colombia by pointing them to the Cross of Jesus Christ.” Mr. Cantu, from Adrian, Mich., is a junior majoring in Spanish with a Bible minor who feels called into full-time Hispanic ministry. |
