A Hixson man said he tripped over his dog while checking out possible prowlers, causing him to accidentally shoot his wife.
Debra Allison Wise, 51, of 944 Ely Road was taken by ambulance to Erlanger Hospital after the incident early Wednesday morning.
Benjamin Wise said he was sleeping on a downstairs couch when the dog awakened him by barking.
He said he got his gun and proceeded toward the front door to see if someone was outside.
Mr. Wise said his wife had also been awakened by the dog and was in front of him. He said he tripped over the dog, causing the gun to fire.
A bullet went into the small of the back of Mrs. Wise and exited from her lower chest.
Arriving officers found her lying at the entryway to the couple's duplex.
