Vols Chosen To Maxwell, Bednarik Watch Lists by special report to the Chattanoogan posted July 3, 2008
Sophomore safety Eric Berry and junior linebacker Rico McCoy are on the initial 2008 Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, while senior tailback Arian Foster and junior quarterback Jonathan Crompton find themselves in the early running for the Maxwell Award. Each list is comprised of 75 players. The Maxwell Award has been presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert W. Tiny Maxwell. The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented to the nations top defensive player since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik, a former Penn and Philadelphia Eagles great. Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced in early November and three finalists for each award will be announced Nov. 25. The winners of the 2008 Maxwell and Bednarik awards will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrahs Entertainment Atlantic City on March 6, 2009. ZANDER SELECTED TO SUN BOWL 75TH ANNIVERSARY TEAM EL PASO, Texas -- Former Tennessee linebacker Carl Zander is one of 75 players named the 75th Anniversary All-Sun Bowl Team to commemorate the Associations Diamond Anniversary, announced President Joe E. Valenzuela. The Brut Sun Bowl, the nations second oldest bowl game, has had 75 different programs compete in the game, which is more than any other bowl in the nation. Tennessee lost its only Sun Bowl appearance, a 28-27 decision to Maryland in 1984. Zander, however, sparkled for the Vols in earning the Jimmy Rogers Jr. Most Valuable Lineman award after that game. The Mendham, N.J., native recorded 24 tackles during the afternoon and led the 1984 Vols with 167 tackles. The four-year letterman and two-year starter went on to an eight-year NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals, including a start in Super Bowl XXIII.
