Patriotism
posted July 4, 2008

I enjoyed the Fourth celebration down at the river last night. There were more people there than I can remember seeing before. It got me thinking was this a spur of patriotism or did people just want to come out for a time at the river?

I prefer to think that more people wanted both and the organizers had done a good job promoting this event. The people in this area were able to get out and forget the high prices for a while and they gathered together to remember in their own way and to hear good music that reminded them of their unique American culture.

I, for one, think this is important, and I am glad that many around here also spent the effort and money to come to such an event.

Does that make everyone there patriotic though? Thomas Sowell has a good piece out on what happens when people forget why America is so unique. There is a poll out saying most of us are proud of America. We are a unique culture in this world and that has led to a culture of sacrifice and service that is different from anything I have read or seen concerning other cultures around the world.

America is something to be proud about and this does lead me to a feeling of patriotism. No matter what the Drive By Media, the dilution of history in our schools, and some public leaders tell us, we are a country where patriotism is still strong.

We should all reflect all the good we as a nation have accomplished (in spite of the bad we have also accomplished), and on this Fourth we can again be glad to be an American.
