Saddam's Stockpiles - And Response (4) posted July 5, 2008 For all those naysayers about Saddam not having WMDs, I just found this headline: "Report: Uranium Stockpile Removed From Iraq in Secret U.S. Mission." Tell me what Saddam was going to do with 550 metric tons of yellowcake. He wasn't going to use it for lawn fertilizer. Let's not forget a variety (~500 rounds) of artillery shells with chemical/ biological agents. Oh, but they were old and degraded. Would you want them in your backyard? I suspect there was much more, either in Iraq, or with sympathetic neighbors. Brian Foley BFoley7517@aol.com * * * Let us not forget the 6,000+ liters of anthrax (enough to kill every man, woman, and child in the U.S. three times) that the U.N. was unable to account for and thereby admonished Saddam. This had nothing to do with Bush ignoring intelligence reports. This was part of the 14 U.N. reports of infractions and lack of cooperation over 12 years, mostly prior to George W. Bush. I am not condoning the actions of Bush as I am a conservative who has been grossly disappointed with Bush (and even more so with those who intend to vote for the least qualified presidential candidate ever, Barrack Obama, simply because they are too blinded by party allegiance to be objective.) However, I find it interesting that Bill Clinton gave speeches in which he said Saddam was clearly acquiring and developing weapons of mass destruction and must be disarmed, yet not a Democrat around seems to remember that fact. Joel Walker * * * Yep, and there was a recent headline about a man in Newport, Tn., who claimed a flying saucer landed, and aliens stole his moonshine. I don't believe that story any more than I believed the story about Paris Hilton caring for drunk elephants. That one could explain Horton hearing a Who however. You can rest assured that if anything, let me repeat, anything, was found that proved the existence of "WMDs", doves would be circling the White House, trumpets would be sounding, and our "Decider-in-Chief" would be strutting around in a codpiece again. McBush, also known as Bush on steroids, McCain, would be dancing up and down the steps of the White House. There would certainly not be any secrecy about it. There would be nothing more satisfying for the Republican Party than to be able to say "I told you so" during a major campaign season. Gosh, Wamp would be impossible to be around. Rod Dagnan * * * Mr. Dagnan, Let me get this straight: Many years ago, under a different administration, reports were released on a daily basis about the weapons of mass destruction that were in Iraq. That administration, along with numerous members of Congress, agreed that these weapons there and were a threat to the safety of the Middle East and the world. Strange how the Bush bashers always forget these things. Or change the subject. To hear them tell it, George Bush fabricated all these reports even before he was elected President. Kinda reminds me of how the conflict in Viet Nam suddenly became "Mr. Nixon's war" after he was elected. The fact that John Kennedy sent the first "advisers" (many of whom went on documented combat missions in a combatant role) has been forgotten. The fact that the first large scale build-up of combat troops took place while Lyndon Johnson was in office also has been clouded in the smoldering ashes of "Mr. Nixon's war". This is not an indictment of either Johnson or Kennedy, just a simple statement of very well documented fact. It's rather like people forgetting that George McGovern voted to support the war until he realized that he had a shot at becoming president. Gee, has that happened recently? I suppose it's a wonderful thing when you can pick and choose the parts of recent history that you like and have the majority of the news media back you up on it. Ed Bradley s10drivr@yahoo.com * * * I read the article by Mr. Foley and the response by Mr. Bradley. Seems that everyone now days can come up with things about the "other" party. Mr. Foley claims that the first advisors were sent to Vietnam by President Kennedy (D). Being an Old Vietnam veteran and a person who likes to read the daily news, I did not think this was exactly right either. So I got on the computer and started reading about the Vietnam War. I read where the first advisors was sent there in 1955 by President Eisenhower (R). President Johnson 'did' sent troops over there to help keep the North Vietnamese from taking over South Vietnam. As I understand it, we were a member of SEATO. They requested assistance from the US and we sent it. I was in the Indian Ocean at the time on the USS Bon Homme Richard CVA-31 and we were sent to Vietnam (Yankee Station). This was in 1964. At that time our military was there as advisors and our helicopters could ferry troops from place to place. If one of our helicopters was shot down we could send in our fighters to drop bombs, fire rockets and fire their machine guns to protect our people until a rescue helicopter could reach them. Our planes often returned to the carrier with bullet holes through their wings. I remember making the remark that a lot of our Helicopters were being shot down or we were dropping bombs at other times too because our planes were flying from daybreak until way after dark 'every day'. They would leave the carrier loaded with bombs, rockets and ammo. When they returned they were empty. By the way, I also read where President Kennedy (D) was against sending troops to Vietnam. Personally, I didn't think we should have been in Vietnam. We know now that it cost us 58,000 American lives and the country wound up going Communist anyway. We are now in Iraq and it has cost over 4,000 lives and the toll is still growing everyday. We have accomplished nothing that has been worth 4,000 of our young Heroes. I think the United States is hurting as far as our leaders are concerned. We went to the Persian Gulf in 1991 and ran the Iraqis out of Kuwait to keep them from invading Saudi Arabia and taking their oil fields. Did the Arabs appreciate that??? If they did they sure have an odd way to showing it. They will keep raising the price of oil as long as we are willing to pay the price. It is my understanding that we have enough oil of our own in Alaska and offshore. We need to get off our hind ends and go get it and tell the Arabs where they can shove theirs.
