McCormick Expects McCain To Win Tennessee By 20%
posted July 14, 2008

Rep. Gerald McCormick told the Pachyderm Club on Monday he expects Republican presidential candidate John McCain to win Tennessee by 20 percent.

He said rural legislators "are absolutely horrified" by Democratic candidate Barack Obama, and McCain will sweep those areas.

Rep. McCormick said McCain should win the state, including Florida, "which has a lot of military people."

He said one of the strengths offered by McCain is his experience on military and security matters.

The speaker also said he expects Republicans will eventually win control of the state House, though it is now four votes short.

He said, "The state is going Republican."

Rep. McCormick said Democrats have controlled the redistricting process and another adjustment is due in two years.

He said, "The growing areas are Republican, and I don't think the Democrats will be able to continue holding us off."

He said he wants to see Tennessee remain a low-tax, pro-business state.

Rep. McCormick said he wants to see restrictions lifted on the process for starting charter schools.

He said the Legislature felt necessary to lower the grade point requirements on students retaining lottery money because so many were dropping out of the program.
