UTC's Dr. Joey Shaw Secures Funding To Continue Prunus Research
posted July 16, 2008

Dr. Joey Shaw, assistant professor of Biological and Environmental Sciences at UTC, has received $2,000 from the National Science Foundation through the University of California at Davis to continue research on the plant genus Prunus.

This award marks the fourth and final year of the project, with total funding reaching $64,581.

Collaborating with Dr. Shaw on this project are Dr. Daniel Potter, professor at UC Davis, and Jun Wen, research botanist at the Smithsonian Institution.

Prunus is a diverse, economically important, and widely distributed genus of trees and shrubs, including plums, peaches, almonds, and cherries. Dr. Shaw and his co-researchers plan to clarify the evolutionary development and taxonomy of Prunus through the study and collection of specimens across America and tropical Asia.

The results of this research will have important implications for plant breeding, conservation efforts, and genomic studies.
