He was of the Baptist faith. He retired from the Honeywell Corporation in 2000, having served 25 years. He was a member of Cleveland Lodge #134 Free and Accepted Masons and he was also a member of the Shriners. He was a member of the United Auto Workers #1676.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eva Lee Deems; brothers, John and Curtis Deems; sister Minnie Putman; and brother in law, Bill Parks.
He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Nancy Goodner Massey, Cleveland; daughter and son in law, Debbie and Randy Chase of Maryville, Tn.; granddaughters and spouse, Jennifer Chase of Cleveland and Tara and Michael Miller of Maryville, Tn.; great grandson, Cameron Chase Miller, Maryville, Tn.; sister, Iva Lee Parks, Dalton, Ga.; brother and sister in law, Renay and Johnnie Deems, Barnesville, Ga.; sister in law, Lois Deems; nieces and nephews; and his faithful dog, “Precious”.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, at 2 p.m. at Grissom Funeral Home with Rev. Winston Payne and Rev. Kenneth Stansberry officiating. Interment will follow in Ft. Hill Cemetery with Bruce Hammond, Dwayne Smith, Jim Huff, Mike Miller, Randy Chase and Ricky Deems serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 19, 2008, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home where there will be a Masonic memorial held at 8 p.m.
