Women, Learn How To Do Basic Home And Car Repairs
posted July 19, 2008

Women, if you don't know how already, please learn to check your car's vital signs such as oil, transmission fluid and anti-freeze levels. Just doing this once or twice a week or every two weeks can add life to your car and ward off avoidable costly car repairs.

My brothers would never work on my car unless I was present if only to hand them a wrench or some other tool while they explained what they were fixing on my or any car. The hubby recently stood on the side while I changed a flat tire. With his cane, he'd point out what I needed to do, but he otherwise didn't help (couldn't help due to a recent illness). There I was, drenched in sweat struggling to loosen the bolts to remove the tire while he was sitting on a stump, sipping ice water cool as an ocean breeze and pointing out instructions with his cane. Both the hubby and my brothers always believed that men should learn to do traditional women stuff and women should learn to do traditional men stuff. Especially, since women still usually live longer than men.

My auntie, who is very healthy, smart and spry, recently called me because she said there was something "wrong" with her car. When I went to check it out I discovered she was about five quarts low on oil. Which means, she virtually had no oil at all. We put the oil in the car, but it still seems like there might be permanent damage. I really don't know how long she'd been driving around with no oil. Even if the oil light doesn't come on, sometimes that empty rattling sound you might hear under your car can indicate your oil is dangerously low.

Next, I'll show her how to replace an electrical outlet and do some basic plumbing repair. These I learned from a cousin who was a master plumber and electrician in his lifetime. Til next time.
