Pair Get 7 Years, 3 Months For Drug Trip
posted July 19, 2008

Two men who were to be paid $3,000 each to take a load of cocaine and heroin to New York City instead will be spending seven years and three months each in federal prison.

Hector Guajardo and Jose Lara appeared before Federal Judge Allan Edgar.

Guajardo told the judge, "I've never been in any kind of trouble. I made a terrible mistake. I truly regret it."

He added, "Never again will I be breaking the law here or elsewhere."

Guajardo, who is 29, said he has three children at home - ages 10, 8 and one nine months he has never seen.

Lara, who was in the restaurant business, also said he has a child five months and a half he also has not seen. He said, "I don't know her. I feel bad for my family."

Their vehicle was stopped after driving erratically on I-75 northbound by Trooper Kevin Hoppe.

Inside the vehicle he found 10 kilograms of cocaine and three kilograms of heroin that had been brought from San Antonio.

Guajardo did not have a driver's license.
