Karen Ann Southerland died peacefully at her home surrounded by a loving circle of her family and friends on Thursday, July 17, 2008.
Born Karen Ann Thompson on Oct. 9, 1944, in Monroe County, Fl., Karen was a retired employee of the Walker County School System, where she worked as an educational diagnostician.
Karen lived life to the fullest. She loved her family, friends and her pets, including here faithful companion, Dharma, her yellow lab. Karen chose to see the good in people, and she maintained a positive attitude about life even during her most difficult days.
She will be greatly missed by so many people.
Survivors include her children, Melissa Southerland (Brian Murray), Sherman (Tanya) Southerland, Tammy (Matt) Worley; and grandchildren, Christopher, Anna, Josh, Jessica and Connor, all of Georgia; brothers, Rock (Marci) Arkie, of Pennsylvania, and Christopher Jones, of Washington; sister, Kristen Chestnut, of California; uncles and aunts, Roy Brown, Seth (Gertrude) Brown, James Alvin and Katherine Baker, all of Tennessee; and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Church of the Nativity, 1201 Cross St., Fort Oglethorpe, with the Rev. Betty Latham officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
The family would especially like to thank the staff of Adventa Hospice for all of their care and support, we could not have done it without them. Additionally, the family would like to thank her caregivers which consisted of family and friends.
