New Covenant Fellowship Church Celebrates its 12th Anniversary posted July 21, 2008 District 5 County Commissioner Greg Beck, presented New Covenant Fellowship and pastor, Dr. Bernie Miller, a plaque and his wife, Madelene, a clock, in honor of their church's 12th anniversary, Sunday, July 20. In June, 1996, 25 Christians gathered in the sanctuary of the former Trinity Woodmore United Methodist Church on North Moore Road to officially start a multi-ethnic church. Dr. Miller said that New Covenant Fellowship is called "a place for every race" because when he unknowingly visited an all white congregation in 1990, they treated him badly. "It was obvious that they did not want a black face in their place. So years later when God called me to start our ministry, I wanted to make sure that everyone knew that they were welcome in our place, regardless of color." Former Mayor Jon Kinsey proclaimed New Covenant Fellowship's first worship service on July 7, 1996, "A Day of New Beginnings". Church organizers say 300 people attended the first worship service. The audience was diverse and the service was inspirational. Over the past 12 years, NCF purchased 23 acres of land at 1326 North Moore Road, on which they built their new worship headquarters and a playground for the young children in the community. Future plans include expanding the worship headquarters to include more classroom space and a multi-purpose youth building. In 2007, New Covenant Fellowship's Community Development Corporation sold five acres to Habitat to build 33 newly designed homes next to their church for single mothers and first time homeowners. The new Habitat community will be called "The Covenant". Founding Pastor, Dr. Bernie Miller, chairman of the Tennessee Advisory Committee for the U.S. Civil Rights Commission and chairman of the U.S. Census Bureau's African American Advisory Committee, said he is grateful for his faithful staff and over 125 volunteers who assist him in ministry. The executive staffers are Dr. Gene Mathis, Executive Pastor; Pat Perry, Dr. Miller's Administrative Assistant; Stephen Doss, Youth Pastor; Reba Kunselman, Bookkeeper, and Sam Patton, Music Director. |
