Ms. Susan Seaton, Adjunct Instructor in the UTC Department of Art, has been awarded a MakeWork Chattanooga Arts Grant valued at $7,032.
This grant will allow Ms. Seaton to devote her full attention to her visual arts project Tommy's Chattanooga: "His Own Ten Feet of It" over the summer.
Ms. Seaton's project seeks to explore the paradoxes inherent in the world of a mentally challenged man in her neighborhood. Over the course of the awards year, Ms. Seaton will create eight to ten paintings influenced by photographs and audio recordings of her subject.
MakeWork is an arts grant program funded through the CreateHere Chattanooga initiative. CreateHere is a collective of programs, projects, incentive funding, and individuals working for creative economic and cultural development in Chattanooga.
Ms. Seaton's project parallels the goals of CreateHere by focusing the attention of creative artists on disadvantaged and overlooked neighborhoods in Chattanooga.
