Menifee Facing Up To 10 Years On Firebombing Charge
posted July 23, 2008

Montez Menifee was told Wednesday he is facing up to 10 years in federal prison on charges of possession of a destructive device and being a felon in possession of such device.

Menifee appeared before Federal Magistrate Judge Susan Lee with his attorney, Robin Flores.

His trial is set Sept. 30 before Judge Sandy Mattice.

Police said Menifee admitted being involved in one recent Chattanooga firebombing using a Molotov cocktail.

Carl Maskew, Bradley County detective, said authorities believe that several firebombings were in retaliation for a recent stabbing death and were gang-related.

Det. Maskew said authorities searched a residence where Menifee had been staying and found several destructive devices consisting of glass beer bottles filled with gasoline and containing a rag in the mouth of the bottle. He said they were in an outside shed and under a porch at the residence.

He said a K-9 with special training in arson investigations alerted to the presence of accelerants on Menifee's clothing and shoes in a room where he had been sleeping.

The detective said Menifee admitted to handling and moving the Molotov cocktails. He said he later admitted to a Chattanooga police officer that he had been involved in one of the firebombing incidents.

He said Menifee has been convicted for several offenses and has been convicted of felony theft in Georgia.
