Obama For President....Of Europe - And Response (3) posted July 24, 2008 “Brevity is the soul of wit.” I want a candidate who wants to run as President of the United States, not President of Europe. I don’t care how many people show up to a rally in Germany, they do not get to vote. I don’t care whom the people of Europe think would make the best next President. That is a decision only reserved for Americans. Maybe B.O. should spend more time touring and talking to Americans than courting Europeans. Yoohoo, we are back here across the pond. Remember us? Johnny Franks seechatt@yahoo.com * * * Johnny: Don't expect too much of Rock Bottom, he doesn't even know he's not on the Senate Banking Committee, as he indicated the other day he was. Ah, well, when you seldom show up in the senate and when you do you take the courageous stand and vote "present", we get what we get. And to think, this guy might be carrying the nuclear football. A dime gets a dollar in a real world crisis he'd lateral the suitcase to the closest advisor and let him/her handle it. A recent president called that "triangulation". John R. Smickle jsbottomfeeder@juno.com * * * I can't believe the way he went over there and talked down about America, about all our problems and mistakes... and this guy wants to be the President? Maybe he could manage the Dixie Chicks and book them at some "community organization events." He is not presidential material. Keith Roberts * * * Mr. Franks is correct about one thing, the decision on who becomes the next President is reserved for Americans. You are right about that, but let me point out a few things: 1. Obama has seen a record number of supporters in Europe, yes (not a small feat for a U.S. President if you can think back over the last eight years) but not just in Europe. Record numbers came out on our side of the pond too. Or have you forgotten 75,000 Americans in Portland, Oregon in May (one report compared the number of people at that one rally to the population of some U.S. cities). In Philadelphia, 35,000 Americans turned out to see him; at the University of Maryland, 18,000 Americans were crowded in support. I can go on if you'd like but I think you can get the picture. 2. Who made the rule that the world is a better, safer place when we find ourselves surrounded by our defined enemies instead of our defined friends? Or when we don't really have too many defined friends left? I don't know about you, I'd prefer an "Axis of Allies" to an "Axis of Evil" any day. 3. Europeans aren't all bad. Just think of all the great things that have come out of "courting" Europeans - Hmmmm, a big new Volkswagen plant, right here in Chattanooga. That's a good European thing. And Shakespeare, who Mr. Franks admires enough to quote, he was European. Americans are not the only voices around the world worthy of respect, Mr. Franks. We may be the only voices that count when it comes to this election, but we aren't the only ones who are affected by the decisions our country makes. Lacie Newton Chattanooga |
