The UTC Mocs will travel to Knoxville to face Bruce Pearl's Vols on Nov. 15.
The University of Tennessee announced its basketball schedule for the 2008-09 season that features games against both teams that participated in the 2008 national championship game in addition to an appearance in the Old Spice Classic in Orlando. and the SEC/Big East Challenge.
The Vols will be celebrating their 100th season of varsity basketball throughout the year with a lettermen’s reunion and the selection of an All-Century team.
“This schedule is designed to send a message to our players that we have confidence in them to play against the best in the country,” said head coach Bruce Pearl, who is 77-24 entering his fourth season at Tennessee. “We do not want to put them in a position that, when we start the SEC part of the schedule, they feel overwhelmed. I want them to feel prepared.”
After opening the season with home games against UTC and UT-Martin (Nov. 18), the Vols will visit Middle Tennessee State (Nov. 21) for the first time since 1988. Tennessee’s football team plays at Vanderbilt the following day.
During Thanksgiving weekend, the Vols will participate in the third annual Old Spice Classic at the Milk House at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla. Joining Tennessee in the field are Georgetown, Gonzaga, Maryland, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Siena and Wichita State. The brackets for the tournament have not been announced at this time.
Following a home game against UNC Asheville (Dec. 3) and a trip to Philadelphia, Pa., to meet Temple, Tennessee will meet Marquette (Dec. 16) in the SEC/Big East Challenge at the Sommet Center in Nashville. The Vols host Belmont (Dec. 20) and Louisiana-Lafayette (Dec. 29) before visiting defending national champion Kansas (Jan. 3) at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan. UT will return home to host Gonzaga (Jan. 7) before opening league play.
Tennessee will begin the defense of its 2008 SEC championship at 2008 SEC Tournament champion Georgia (Jan. 10). Tennessee won its ninth SEC championship in 2008 after winning a school record 31 games and posting a 14-2 conference record.
The Vols will take one break from league play when they host national runner-up Memphis (Jan. 24) in a rematch of last year’s game that saw No. 2-ranked Tennessee upset the No. 1-ranked Tigers in Memphis.
Television information and tip off times will be announced at a later date.
Season ticket renewal forms were sent to existing season ticket holders earlier this month and must be returned by Aug. 11. Any season tickets that remain will be put on sale Sept. 3. Remaining single game tickets will go on sale in October.
“We have had to make a few modest adjustments to our ticket prices to be able to continue to recruit, educate and train world-class student-athletes while continuing to be self-sufficient and not using tax or university dollars,” said John Currie, executive associate athletic director. “As we have done for the last three years, in order to continue to provide family-friendly entertainment and make Tennessee basketball accessible to as many UT fans as possible, we did our best to keep the 300 level season ticket and family plan tickets as low as possible."
Season tickets for the lower level side court are $535 (a $7 increase per game), lower level end zone seats are $385 (a $5 increase per game) and upper arena seats are $160 (a $.50 savings per game). Tennessee also offers a “family pack” which consists of a minimum purchase of four tickets, maximum of eight, at $90 per ticket. The tickets are located in the 300-level in the south end zone. Individual game tickets will go on sale in early to mid October for the public. Ticket prices for the 300 level will be $10 for non-conference games (with the exception of Memphis and Gonzaga) and $15 for SEC games, Memphis and Gonzaga
Tickets for the SEC/Big East Challenge in Nashville, which also includes the Vanderbilt-South Florida game earlier that evening, are available for $45 and $60 by contacting the UT Athletic Ticket Office at 865-656-1200 or 800-332-VOLS.
