Girls Preparatory School outfielder Megan Givens ended her college search this week as she committed to play for the University of Tennessee and Coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly.

"I love the campus, the academic opportunities, and I am excited about playing for the Weekly's," commented Givens. "I have grown up around Tennessee sports my whole life, and after I visited the campus and met the coaches and players, I knew that I wanted to be a Lady Vol," she continued.

Givens, a 5'1" left-hander, helped lead her GPS teams to state titles in both softball and volleyball this past year. At GPS Class Day ceremonies, she was honored with the Laura Holt Outstanding Athlete Award, given to a junior. With one season left to play for the Bruisers, Givens holds a .358 career batting average.

"Megan is one of the hardest working and unselfish players I have had the privilege to coach," said GPS Coach Susan Crownover. "She is always consistent at the plate, with the ability to hit the long ball or lay down a bunt for a hit. Defensively, she is outstanding, always gets a great jump on the ball and with her speed can really cover some ground in the outfield. I know going to Tennessee is a lifelong dream of Givvy's and we are extremely proud of her accomplishment. Tennessee is getting a student with outstanding academic and athletic credentials, as well as a young woman of strong character."

Givens' commitment to improve her game led her to play with the Fury Fastpitch Junior Olympic team this summer. Givens traveled all over the country with the Fury facing the top competition in the nation.

"My experience with the Fury has really helped prepare me for next level," explained Givens. "I have learned so much this summer and have worked hard to develop the ability to bunt, slap, and hit away."

"Megan is one of the best outfielders I have ever coached," said her Fury Coach Jeremy Higdon. "She has tremendous range and a great arm. I believe she will have an opportunity to have an immediate impact when she gets to Knoxville."

In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Givens has been equally successful in the classroom. She received awards this past year for outstanding academic achievement in both English and French, and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is president of the Beta Club and active in the Key Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
