The Tennessee Nursing Association recently approved Hospice of Chattanooga ELNEC program for Continuing Nursing Education units. The continuing nursing education activity allows for 10.5 contact hours with national approval by the American Nurses Credentialing Centers Commission on accreditation.

The application process that began last fall was submitted to TNA in March, 2008 with 3,000 pages of supporting documentation. Tennessee Nurses Association officials said the application was “near perfect.”

The End of Life Nurse Education Consortium is an education program for Nurses who care for patients at the end of life. There are eight modules that cover different aspects of end of life care.
The modules are: Nursing Care at the End-of Life, Pain Management, Ethical Issues, Cultural Considerations, Loss, Grief & Bereavement, Symptom Management, Communication and Preparation For and Care at the Time of Death.

Hospice of Chattanooga has been offering the ELNEC course to Nurses for three years. They open the class to nurses from partnering outside facilities as well.

In 2007, the ELNEC program was expanded to include other HOC disciplines such as Chaplains, Social Workers. This year, the program was adapted to a one-day course for C.N.A’s.

Certified Nursing Assistants from other facilities are welcome to attend the one-day seminar.

A core group of HOC staff have been the organizers and trainers for this program. All who teach the course must have completed the course successfully.

Chief Nursing Officer Julie Payne said the organizers do a great job keeping the course up to date and fresh for all who attend.

Hospice of Chattanooga offers free two-day ELNEC training classes for nurses.

For more information on the trainings, call Phyllis Long at 892-4289, ext. 606.
