Inaugural Chattanooga Classic Prostate Cancer Walk To Be Oct. 11
posted August 6, 2008

Individuals and families will gather on Raccoon Mountain on Saturday, Oct. 11, to participate in the inaugural Chattanooga Classic Prostate Cancer Walk presented by Erlanger Medical Center.

Proceeds from the walk will be donated to the American Cancer Society to educate, screen and service prostate cancer patients in the Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia areas.

Honorary co-chairs will be Mayor Ron Littlefield and Chattanooga Police Chief, Freeman Cooper who are both prostate cancer survivors.

Held in conjunction with the Chattanooga Classic PGA Nationwide Tour Golf Tournament, the event includes 2-mile and 4-mile walks.

Mayor Ron Littlefield said, “Like most men, I tend to avoid doctors. However, my experience with prostate cancer has taught me a valuable lesson: Failure to identify the problem and deal with it early could have cost me my life - and could have cost the city of Chattanooga a great police chief.”

Raising awareness and research funds to benefit prostate cancer are important for our community because one in every six Caucasians and one in every four African American men will get prostate cancer sometime in his life. Over 218,890 new cases are expected this year which is more than breast cancer.

“It’s not a topic that we like to talk about but, like it or not, it is very important for all men to get tested for prostate cancer. This event helps raise awareness about the disease and the need for early testing” said Chief Freeman Cooper.

The walks are not timed and emphasis of the event is the importance of early screenings for prostate cancer. Wheelchairs and strollers are encouraged in these events, which winds around the reservoir on beautiful Raccoon Mountain.

Race registration starts at 9 a.m. at Laurel Point on Raccoon Mountain. The two and four mile walks will begin at 10:00 and 10:15 a.m. Registration fees range from $10.00 to $25.00, depending on age and date of registration.
