Hispanic Displacement Relief Coalition Holds Informational Meeting For Public
posted August 7, 2008

An introductory information meeting addressing the current situation and pressing needs among Chattanooga's Hispanic population take place Thursday, Aug. 14, at Miller Plaza in downtown Chattanooga.

The gathering will be led by the Hispanic Displacement Relief Coalition and will take place at 11 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Created in response to the April 16th immigration raid at Pilgrim's Pride Corporation in Chattanooga, the HDRC seeks to inform the public about the continued effects of such displacement on the community, as well as the monetary strain placed on the social service organizations that serve them.

The mission of the HDRC is to support the Hispanic community by advocating on their behalf and raising public awareness of the gifts they bring to the social and economic well-being of our region. In an effort to educate the public, implement change, and advocate for the more than 15,000 Hispanics currently living in Hamilton County, the HDRC emphasizes the humanitarian needs still present among this community.

The HDRC consists of leaders from local service agencies, including Episcopal Metropolitan Ministry; Chattanooga Catholic Deanery Hispanic Ministry; Hamilton County Baptist Association; La Paz de Dios; Ladies of Charity; Partnership for Families, Children, and Adults; St. Andrew's Center; The Salvation Army.

At the gathering, HDRC will announce details for its public information session to be held Sept. 25 from 3-5 p.m. at The Memorial Auditorium.

Local businesses, public officials, service organizations, churches, schools, the media and all who are interested are invited to attend.

For information on either meeting, as well as HDRC efforts, please contact La Paz de Dios at 423 624-8414 or sjohnson@lapazdedios.org.
