Artillery Demonstrations At Point Park Saturday
posted August 7, 2008

Living history programs will be held on Saturday at Point Park on the Lookout Mountain Battlefield.

Living historians portraying Confederate soldiers will conduct artillery demonstrations throughout the day. Each demonstration will last 20-30 minutes and will begin at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

During the siege of Chattanooga, Confederate artillery batteries were positioned on the summit of Lookout Mountain in an attempt to prevent Union forces from using the Tennessee River and Lookout Valley as a supply route into Chattanooga. These batteries were commanded by Colonel Edward Porter Alexander. Alexander’s batteries remained in place until the first week of November, when they, along with the remainder of General James Longstreet’s Corps, were sent to Knoxville. On the morning of the Battle of Lookout Mountain, Nov. 24, 1863, Confederate artillery batteries commanded by James Garrity and Max Van Den Corput were placed on the summit to fire on Union forces advancing up the slopes of the mountain.

For additional information about this program and future programs contact the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center at (423) 821-7786.
